Pride Plays

@ Woolly Mammoth 2025

Project Overview

Pride Plays is a multi-day festival produced by Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company that celebrates LGBTQIA+ voices through theatre, community programming, and cultural events. In June 2025, the festival featured six full-length plays, alongside artist talkbacks, late-night sound sessions, local performances, and interactive installations.

Challenges & Goals

  • Host a festival series for the first time in the theatre’s history. Align Woolly as a hub for experimentation and artistic innovation

  • Through offering 6 full length readings over 3 days, provide job opportunities for local actors, directors, stage managers

  • Beyond plays, the festival should include installations, talkbacks, celebrations, and youth engagement to transform Woolly Mammoth into a community hub, not just a theatre.

  • Strategically partner with World Pride / Capital Pride Alliance given the ethos and programming alignment of Pride Plays.

Outcomes & Impact

  1. Strong attendance and demand: All performances sold out, and created a waitlist procedure for additional seats

  2. Community resonance: festival attendees engaged not only with the plays but with the broader cultural programming and installations, reinforcing belonging and pride

  3. Artist elevation and pipeline growth: participating playwrights and collaborators gained exposure and critical feedback, strengthening future opportunities

  4. Institutional momentum: Pride Plays reinforced Woolly Mammoth’s reputation as a forward-looking, inclusive theatre committed to representation and experimentation

  5. Partnered and received funding from World Pride and Metro Weekly
